Every week I meet investors who say: “I’ll start my SIP next month.”
I used to explain compounding with charts and graphs. Now I just show them the numbers. The results are brutal.
The Math That Changes Minds
Let’s take a simple example:
- Monthly SIP: ₹10,000
- Expected return: 12% CAGR
- Goal: 20 years
If you start today: ₹99.9 lakhs
If you start 1 year later (19 years): ₹86.4 lakhs
Cost of that 1-year delay: ₹13.5 lakhs
Read that again. You didn’t save ₹1.2 lakh (12 months × ₹10,000). You lost ₹13.5 lakh in future wealth. That’s an 11x penalty.
It Gets Worse With Larger Amounts
| Monthly SIP | Delay | Wealth Lost |
|---|---|---|
| ₹5,000 | 1 year | ₹6.7 lakh |
| ₹10,000 | 1 year | ₹13.5 lakh |
| ₹25,000 | 1 year | ₹33.7 lakh |
| ₹50,000 | 1 year | ₹67.4 lakh |
| ₹10,000 | 3 years | ₹35.2 lakh |
| ₹10,000 | 5 years | ₹53.8 lakh |
At ₹50,000/month, a single year of delay costs you ₹67.4 lakh. That’s not a rounding error — that’s a car. Or a child’s education fund.
Why This Happens
Compounding is exponential, not linear. The last few years of a SIP generate more wealth than the first several years combined.
In a 20-year SIP at 12%:
- Years 1-10 generate ~30% of total wealth
- Years 11-20 generate ~70% of total wealth
When you delay by a year, you’re not losing year 1. You’re losing year 20 — the most valuable year of the entire journey.
How I Use This With Clients
As an MFD, this is the most powerful conversion tool in your arsenal:
- Open the Cost of Delay Calculator on FintechGyan
- Input the client’s planned SIP amount and horizon
- Show them the delay cost
- Ask: “Is there any reason to wait even one more month?”
The conversation usually ends there. No hard selling needed — the math does the work.
“The best investment advice I ever received was this: ‘Start today, not tomorrow.’ Every tomorrow costs you more than you think.”
